I’ve always been a believer that it’s best to build quality and not cut corners. Many of the things we use day-to-day. Our cars, phones, computers…all quickly wear out or get replaced. But our homes will be around longer than anything else we invest in. It’s important to get it right the first time when it comes time to do a fresh remodel or upgrade your home. That remodel just might be there when your grandchildren are grown…imagine any other item you can say that about around you ?

When we drive off on our final day of a remodel, it’s a good feeling knowing that our work will be there for years and years to come. Kevin and I sometimes laugh and mention ‘I pitty the fool that has to tear that stuff out someday to update it”…cause we know we went the extra mile to add that extra nail.screw.or glue  to give it extra strength, added that extra board..even though it didn’t have to have it..

I know it’s in my genetics just as my grandfather would drive 16 penny nails in at just the right angle saying “now, that will tear the board up before it will come out of there”.

That’s how you go the extra mile and take pride in what your building, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our fine finish cabinet and trim painting is carried out in the same way. Priming everything with the finest spray equipment you can buy..then hand sanding to a smooth finish before we ever start our final coats of paint.

Then we use the best top coat paint we can buy… it’s not the easiest to work with or the fastest method  but nothing compares to the final finish using these techniques and products…the final finish always makes it worth it.

I know when I finish a cabinet door, drawer or chassis the final finish may still be on there 20-30 or maybe even 50 years from now.

It’s a pretty cool feeling knowing someone will use  and enjoy work I’m doing for years and years to come, and for me it’s a matter of pride to do the best that can be done.

“Do it right the first time, to the very best of your ability..over-build it and take pride in everything you do”..that’s my motto and I’m proud to carry on that tradition.

The trim was first sprayed in white fresh start Benjamin Moore primer, then hand sanded to a glass smooth finish. Two coats of high gloss Advance Alkyd based paint was applied by HVLP spray to give it the high gloss finish.

Once installation was complete the room looks amazing…check out the pictures..including paint and finish in our shop and install shots. The size of this crown molding allowed us to install it right over some of  their smaller crown. The area around the fireplace had custom supports installed in the attic area. We cut custom backer boards and installed them first as support in the other areas.

12 mm Butterscotch Oak flooring installed in the living room and hallway area over a soft-under-foot underlayment of eco Silent Sound provided a new warmth to the room. We also installed new larger baseboards and quarter rounds throughout and new crown molding to top it all off.  The kitchen, washroom, dining and bathrooms all got new dura-ceramic installed and the old vinyl got chipped out a piece at a time and finally gave in to a complete flooring make over. Add to this the online movie streaming services, drive by DVD rentals and incredible technologies in sound processing and more people are staying home, inviting friends over and enjoying popcorn in their own living rooms.

So now you’ve got that new big screen TV, your new receiver and surround sound speaker system. Then you’ve got your gaming systems, cable or satellite box and sometimes a TIVO box.

So where do you put all this stuff?

I’ve watched this as it has evolved, and the remodeling business has put me in a lot of homes. I’ve noticed many different ways that we’ve tried to accommodate these components needed for the ultimate at-home theater experience.

After spending months on the concept we’ve achieved what I believe solves many problems along with blending into our living environments and providing much needed storage space.

Criteria:

Stand for big screen TV that optimizes viewing height
Space for home theater receiver, gaming system, cable box etc.
Plenty of room for games, DVDs and media.
The ability to remote control all of this without leaving the doors open.
Help control and dissipate the heat generated by all of these electrical components.

Almost everyone has a large collection of books, magazines and keepsakes that need organizing and space.

STAGE 1:

Home Theater Center-An original concept I’ve worked on for months taking the best of current and custom systems I’ve seen everywhere and adding on needed functionality.

STAGE2:

Matching bookcases.
Adding needed space for our large libraries of books, DVDs, keepsakes and memorabilia, etc. for the ultimate entertainment wall.

This design can be custom built and sized for most any living environment with or without the matching bookcases.

Here’s the first pictures of STAGE 1. Concept by Jerry Cable, and  3-D design done by Kevin Leger. Custom building is all cabinet grade wood with our finest spray finish. This unit has a 55″ wide screen TV with room for up to 70″ TVs with room to spare. Custom designs can be done for larger 80″ TVs as well.

High volume low pressure paint spraying.

This is the same kind of spray equipment used to paint cars. We are using this equipment specifically for our kitchen, bath and furniture renovations and the resulting finish is finer than you could ever achieve with a brush or roller.

The Fuji has a four stage turbine unit that provides a lot of power to atomize the specific paints we use on cabinets and doors. The pressurized gravity cup allows us to spray inside of cabinets, even upside down when we have to.

This system combined with the finest cabinet paints provides exceptional results every time and we now use it exclusively when the job calls for a kitchen make over, vanity paint or door painting. Compared to the airless spray units, the overspray is very controllable and much easier to control. This reduced overspray also means a lot more product ends up on the surface of what you paint instead of being released into the air.

I’ve tried them all, brush, roller, airless and now HVLP..and the HVLP provides a superior finish with less overspray, easier cleanup and a fine finish that is as good as you will get.  We also have a smaller Graco HVLP  backup unit that  gives us exceptional finishes.

I think the best way to describe this technology is like a large airbrush, that’s how it seems to act in real-world use. The hot air served up by the turbines quickly atomizes the paint and helps it to stick to the surface of the cabinetry, any overspray quickly drops off just inches past whatever you are spraying.

We do a tremendous amount of trim work in our remodeling and it was time to add a 12″ saw to our equipment. Like usual, I researched everything available on the market and the Milwaukee 6955 came to the top every time.  Almost everyone that works with one had good things to say about the saw. It has lights on each side of the blade, double bevel, huge back fence and guide rails that are beefy. The only thing we’d like to see added is a laser..our 10″ saw has one, and we use it alot. Most old school carpenters see them as a gimick, but we know ours well, keep it calibrated and produce light tight cuts with it all day long..come on Milwaukee..why not add it to this saw??..oh well, even without it this beast of a saw lands at the top of the heap.

We mounted the saw to the Ridgid suv miter saw stand…we have our 10″ saw mounted on the same stand. This rolling stand lets one person load and unload these heavy machines with little effort, roll into place and setup production in minutes.

The 6955 has big capacity and we put it to the test recently on a big crown molding job…7″ crown is practically the biggest you can find and this saw cut it in position all day long with extreme precision.  Advanced shouds help keep the debris to a minimum and that’s saying a lot for a miter saw, as they tend to throw saw dust everywhere…but hooked to a good dust extractor..we found it to be the least messy of the bunch.

This saw has up-front digital read out for the miter angle with precision down to 0.1″!!..it dials in fast and that speeds up your  cuts significantly.  Controls are big and beefy, but once you spend a couple hours running this saw, it doesn’t come across as big as it really is..nice counter-balanced springs..fast blade braking and those dual lights really do come into play more than you would initially think.

60 degrees right and 55 degrees left tilt, adjustable depth of cut for for grooves or rabbits. Motor has constant power technology  built in..just when you think your going to bog it with a big cut..the motor just kicks in and powers through with gusto! Soft start circuitry controls this beasts kick as you power up.

This big boy can handle a 2″x14″ at 90 degrees and a 2″x10″ at 45 degree  miter.

In short, this saw delivers a lot that a large radial arm saw could do..but in a completely portable package.

Just one more top of the line machine to provide the best in service to our customers…..

All doors, door casings and crown molding were finished using our HVLP fine finish spray painting with an alkyd cabinet coat semi gloss paint.

Typical of our kitchen cabinet remodels, we took the wood back as close to bare as possible then for a little class installed some small molding on the fronts of all the doors and drawers. This served to cover that old ugly router inlay that was done to them 30 years ago.

The cabinet chassis was sanded and finished in place using our dust extracting sanders and HVLP spray painting unit.

Paint color was custom mixed with a little flotral to help it level perfectly. Finish is semi gloss Benjamin Moore Water Borne Alkyl Advance for a beautiful hard wearing surface that will last for years and years.

The results are furniture grade and worlds apart from the plain white latex brushed  finish they had for many years.

Sprayed primer was hand polished and two coats of top coat applied to restore this vanity to a fine finish any home owner would be proud to show off.

All finishes were applied with our Fuji Fine Finish HVLP Turbine. This unit provides extensive control of overspray and delivers piano finish results not achievable with brushes or rollers.

The walls of the bath will now be re-textured and painted to bring this bathroom up to date.

This little sander delivers in spades, and simply defies its’ size in every way. For the average homeowner this would probably be overkill, especially when you see the price of these German built machines, but to a remodeling specialist who appreciates quality equipment that is second to none..it’s simply a joy to use all day long.

The 3″ sander has three different modes of operation..in the geared rotex mode with some heavy grit sandpaper installed it will hog off material at an incredible rate. In the standard random mode, you can apply a super fine glass smooth finish with some 220 and up sandpaper installed. THEN Festool took it an additional step from their bigger brother Rotex sanders by adding an interchangeable delta pad to get into areas that only a delta can reach. They achieved all of this by also using their near dustless technology where sanding debris is picked up through the sandpaper and the hooked CT dust extractor to allow this to all be achieved with HEPA filtration.

What does all this mean?…We can sand right in your kitchen, remodeling Kitchen cabinetry with almost zero dust blown around into the room or home!

Although our large Bosch ROS sander hooked to a vac comes close–There are no other sanding units I know of that can do this with less dust released into a clients home than the Festool sanders hooked to a Festool CT HEPA dust extractor.

For anyone that has spent any time sanding a large project you know this is quite an achievement.

Festool tests their equipment beyond anything it will ever experience in a working environment..including running them non stop for days while blowing desert sand all over them.  I can attest that after spending weeks with this sander, some days running it for hours and hours non stop..that it is virtually in-destructable!

The sandpaper last longer than you expect due to the extraction immediately removing it from the grit before it can wear it out or glaze it over and although the ergonomics are different from your typical ROS sander..you quickly get used to it and spending hours and hours non-stop sanding does not numb your hands or wear you out from fatigue.

We have an assortment of larger Random Orbital sanders in the 5″ pad range we use for getting all the large flat areas  smoothed down quickly or removing old paint or finish…but when it comes time to get into the details or small areas of the chassis or door moldings, nothing beats this little Festool!

Just one more machine that helps us to achieve the finest remodeling and renovation work possible..and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Here’s some shots of the Festool RO90 when it was new and doing cabinet production work in our shop over the past couple months of use.

We took it through the exact same process as our Kitchen Cabinetry, Washroom cabinets and Bathroom Vanities renovation fine finish painting.

The table was very plain and scratched in places, but still had really good wood underneath and made for a perfect piece for our process.

In the end we’re able to achieve a near “piano grade finish” that cannot be achieved through  brush or roller paint application.

The little table was sanded back to the wood using our virtually dustless sanding process working through grits of sandpaper as we get into the wood to reveal and restore the wood to as near perfect as possible. Then we sprayed a premier primer using our state of the art Fuji HVLP Turbine spray gun.

The primer is then hand sanded with a fine sandpaper to achieve a super smooth primed finish.

There are two coats of final finish paint applied. The paint used is Benjamin Moore ADVANCE. This product is a water borne alkyd-based paint that gives all the fine properties of an oil based finish but cleans up with soap and water. It also sprays excellent in our Fuji equipment. A little flotral was added to help in the leveling of the finish and Polycrylic water based top coat was applied directly over the last wet top coat to achieve the super fine piano smooth and glossy finish.

The result is once again so fine you have to see it in person as it’s nearly impossible to photograph just how pretty this fine finish came out.
